The Iteration Lab Manifesto

Iteration Lab is a project-advancement triage center within Georgetown University’s Communication, Culture, and Technology Program. Iteration Lab deploys a three-part development framework pioneered by its directors, Profs. Evan Barba and J.R. Osborn, to help participants identify and transition projects into their next phase of development.

The uniqueness of our approach lies in a universal framework that applies iterative methods regardless of discipline, application, domain, or goal. We meet participants where they are, addressing whatever situation they bring to the table, and define useful outcomes that advance collaborative problem-solving.

Iteration Lab specializes in a three-stage process of project development:

  1. DE-ITERATION
We peel away layers of fundamental, hidden, or flawed assumptions to uncover the roots of an issue, where change can be most effective. By identifying points of failure and iterating to remove and recalibrate, Iteration Lab can revitalize broken ideas and restore trust.
  2. CROSS-ITERATION
We infuse new thinking to hybridize existing projects and reposition them for future success. By reframing the situation from diverse perspectives, Iteration Lab identifies novel pathways of potential change.
  3. RE-ITERATION
We sort through the complexity and new insights of previous stages to articulate a new project vision. By developing actionable steps for achieving that vision, Iteration Lab provides a scaffold for measuring progress.

Reiteration marks the end of one cycle and the beginning of the next iteration.
